Stem Cells for Nurseries (2009)
This series of small works on vellum was the result of a discussion I had with researcher Holly Longstaff as part of our collaborative project entitled Intersect. I had contacted Holly for Intersect because I was seeking a deeper understanding of the ethical aspects of genomic sciences and what particular interests and issues were on her forefront. I proposed meeting face-to-face on a regular basis over a period of six months. Following each meeting, I would create art work inspired by the topic of discussion. Some resulting works are seeds to further develop while other pieces germinated into fully developed ideas. In stem cells for nurseries, I was contemplating the ethical debates and value differences contested within reproductive technologies and stem cell research. I am also amazed at the power of the cells themselves and seeking to interpret their forms in these works.
